Easy Guide to Cleaning Your Oven Inside and Out

A clean oven is essential for odor-free cooking and optimal appliance performance. After heavy use, tackling the grime inside and out will keep your kitchen sparkling and extend the life of your appliance.

Inside the Oven

Before you begin, remove all racks and accessories. For a deep clean, you have two primary options:

  1. Commercial Oven Cleaner: Spray the interior following the product instructions, ensuring good ventilation and wearing gloves. Allow the recommended time for the powerful chemicals to break down the tough grease before wiping it clean.

  2. Natural Baking Soda Paste: For a gentler, fume-free approach, mix half a cup of baking soda with a few tablespoons of water to form a thick paste. Spread this paste all over the interior, avoiding the heating elements, and let it sit overnight. The next day, spritz the dried paste with white vinegar; the resulting fizzing action helps lift the residue. Wipe everything away with a damp cloth or sponge.

Pro Tip: Clean the removed racks separately by soaking them in a bathtub or large container with dish soap and hot water.

Cleaning the Exterior

The outside of your oven is much easier to maintain. For the door and side panels, a simple solution of mild dish soap and warm water is often enough. Use a non-abrasive cloth to wipe down the surfaces.

For the glass oven door, a specialized glass cleaner or a vinegar-and-water solution will easily cut through fingerprints and light grease. Avoid spraying cleaner directly into any vents or near the control panel electronics. Finish the job by meticulously wiping the control knobs and handles.

Regular cleaning prevents food buildup from becoming permanent. For more detailed tips on deep cleaning your oven, especially after major cooking sessions, check out this resource: Deep Cleaning Your Oven After the Holidays.
